Akholi Practice · Retained Advisory

Retained Advisory

Standing independent counsel, on retainer, across the institution’s whole outsourcing and global capability center portfolio. A senior Akholi executive holds the portfolio, knows the estate before a call lands, and is on call for the decisions that move the most money and carry the most personal accountability.

Standing · independent · on retainer · nothing downstream to sell

The problem

The calls arrive faster than a one-off engagement can be stood up

The big calls come on their own timetable: a renewal, a price review, a dispute, a new deal, a GCC build or move, an agentic repricing, a supervisory question. A fresh independent read takes months to stand up, so the only standing read on the portfolio is the provider’s or the champion’s. The portfolio is governed at arm’s length, with no continuous independent view.

Of 150 engagements in the Akholi study, 56 were canceled, and the failure was usually institutional, not the technology. The same institutional risk reaches the GCC portfolio by the same reasoning. A portfolio that fails this often needs a continuous independent watch, not a read commissioned only after a call has already gone wrong.

What it covers

What the retainer holds

  • Portfolio coverage, kept current. Every engagement and GCC mapped on one independent view, kept current between decisions rather than rebuilt each time a call lands.
  • An independent read the provider did not author. A continuous, buyer-held read of the portfolio’s true condition, held between decisions, so the board is never dependent on the provider’s own account when a call arrives.
  • On-call decision support, in days. When a material call lands, an independent read arrives in days rather than a new engagement over months, because the advisor is already loaded on the portfolio.
  • Board and committee cadence. A standing, board-visible independent line on the portfolio, brought to the audit or risk committee on a set rhythm.
  • An annual re-baseline. The agentic economics and the regulatory bar move each year, so the read is reset each year, not left to drift.
What the institution gets

Counsel that is decision-ready in days, not months

The institution gets continuous independent oversight of the whole outsourcing and GCC portfolio, and a standing assurance line the provider did not author. A senior Akholi executive already knows the estate when a call arrives, so the independent read is ready in days rather than stood up over months. Akholi sells no implementation, no managed service, no GCC to build, and no platform, so the counsel owes nothing to any provider.

The standing discipline

A completed offering does not end the relationship. Where an institution wants the independent discipline to hold between decisions, Retained Advisory keeps a senior Akholi executive in the room, already loaded on the portfolio, unconflicted, and on call.

Talk to us

Retained Advisory fits an institution where

  • A live outsourcing and GCC portfolio is owned personally and cannot be delegated.
  • The big calls arrive faster than one-off engagements can be stood up to serve them.
  • The board wants independent senior counsel on retainer who already knows the portfolio.
  • The scale is portfolio and board level, across multiple engagements or centers.
  • The counsel must owe nothing to any provider and have nothing downstream to sell.
